The Commune

Award-winning filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg’s (THE HUNT, Oscar® and Golden Globe Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film; THE CELEBRATION, Golden Globe Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film) loving, sharply observed new drama, THE COMMUNE was co-written by Vinterberg and filmmaker Tobias Lindholm (writer/director, A WAR, Oscar® Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film; co-writer, THE HUNT). The film had its international premiere at the 2016 Berlin International Film Festival, where actress Trine Dyrholm won the Silver Bear for Best Actress, and also screened at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival and the 2016 AFI Fest. Magnolia pictures will open the film in New York and Los Angeles on Friday, May 19, with a national rollout to follow.

When Erik’s (Ulrich Thomsen) father passes away, his wife, Anna (Trine Dyrholm), sick of Erik’s dour outlook and longing for something new, sees his now-empty family home as an opportunity to experiment with the trendy concept of communal living. Energized by the relaxed taboos of 1970s Copenhagen, Anne and Erik assemble a diverse, motley crew of cohabitants and embark on their new adventure – though they soon take very different paths. While Anna is anxious to stay home and experience life with her new extended family, Erik finds a more traditional way of reinvigorating himself: an affair with one of his students. When Anna tries to reconcile these two situations, the commune — and the marriage at its core — begins to unravel. Driven by brilliant lead performances by Dyrholm and Thomsen, the reunited stars of Vinterberg’s THE CELEBRATION, THE COMMUNE is a moving and humorous examination of the fallout from the social upheavals of the 1970s, and how values can quickly come into conflict with old habits and affiliations.
