Shortly after 9/11, a heroic young Mexican man, Luis, crosses the border into America and takes the grueling journey north in an attempt to find his missing immigrant father, Balthazar, who may or may not have survived the World Trade Center attack. But once in New York, Luis must survive on the often unwelcoming streets until, through the help of several kindly new people he meets, finds work, shelter, friendship and even love as he follows every possible clue in search of the elusive Balthazar. A series of unexpected turns and revelations eventually lead Luis to his father, who is still alive but traumatized by his 9/11 experience--as well as by a life of exhausting, menial work. In the end, Balthazar decides to rejoin his wife and family in Mexico, while Luis stays in New York to work and earn money to better all of their lives.
