Dickensian, Marxist...dystopian, it's a movie as deliriously unclassifiable as it is expertly focused in its desire to provoke and entertain.

White God

WHITE GOD is Kornél Mundruczó’s emotionally rousing and genre-bending new feature. Co-written and directed by Mundruczó (DELTA, TENDER SON: THE FRANKENSTEIN PROJECT), the film astonished audiences at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Prize Un Certain Regard, and is an Official Selection for the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.

WHITE GOD is a story of the indignities visited upon animals by their supposed “human superiors,” but it’s also a brutal, beautiful metaphor for the political and cultural tensions sweeping contemporary Europe. When young Lili (Zsófia Psotta) is forced to give up her beloved dog Hagen, because its mixed-breed heritage is deemed 'unfit' by The State, she and the dog begin a dangerous journey back towards each other. At the same time, all the unwanted and so-called ‘unfit’ dogs rise up under a new leader, Hagen, who has learned all too well in his journey through the streets and animal control centers how to bite the hand that beats him. After the dogs seize an opportunity to escape and revolt against mankind, courageous Lili may be the only person who can halt this unexpected war between man and dog. With stunningly choreographed scenes featuring a cast of over 200 canines, WHITE GOD is a thrilling and visceral fairy tale.

WHITE GOD will also screen at the 2015 New Directors/New Films festival and was Hungary’s official entry for the 2014 Oscar® for Best Foreign Language Film.

“A fierce and beautiful Hungarian parable about a girl, her dog, and the uprising that’s sparked after they are separated…When the dogs break free and run through the streets in ‘White God,” demolishing barriers and biting the hands that have hit them, the movie takes a leap into bold political metaphor, offering up a memorable image of the great unwashed gone (literally) barking mad.” – Manhola Dargis, The New York Times

“Thrillingly strange. The sixth and best feature to date from distinctive Hungarian stylist Kornél Mundruczó. Rousing and emotionally purposeful — not to mention morally challenging.”
– Guy Lodge, Variety

“White God confirms Mundruczó’s position as one of Europe’s most exciting, unpredictable and technically competent directors. In a world where so many filmmakers seem to rework the same material over and over, he is a true wild card – a filmmaker with ‘un certain regard’ if ever there was one.” – Nick Roddick, Sight & Sound

“Remarkable and riveting. This surprising movie is perhaps the most memorable of all the films I saw at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. It’s haunting, and quite extraordinary.”
– Pete Hammond, Deadline Hollywood
