Super Size Me
Super Size Me
Why are Americans so fat? Find out in SUPER SIZE ME, the hilarious, award-winning tongue in-cheek documentary about the legal, financial and physical costs of America's hunger for fast food. It's the Bowling for Columbine of nutrition, and not a moment too soon. In case you haven't heard, an astonishing thirty-seven percent of American children and adolescents are carrying too much fat and two out of every three adults are overweight or obese. And all that excess weight is killing us. Is it our fault for lacking self-control or are the fast food corporations to blame? Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock hit the road and interviewed experts in 20 U.S. cities, including Houston, the "fattest city" in the U.S. From surgeons general to gym teachers, cooks to kids, lawmakers to legislators, authorities shared their research, opinions and "gut feelings" on our ever-expanding waist lines. But what makes SUPER SIZE ME not only important but memorably entertaining is the fact that Spurlock also put his own body on the line, living on *nothing* but McDonald's for an entire month, just to see what would happen, just to see how toxic this stuff is, just to see how quickly a "happy meal" becomes rather unhappy. He had three simple rules:
1) He could only eat what was available over the counter, water included.
2) No "super sizing" unless offered.
3) He had to eat every item on the menu at least once.
It all adds up to a fat food bill, increasingly harrowing visits to the three doctors monitoring his deterioration, one anxious vegan chef girlfriend (no kidding!) and compelling viewing for anyone who's ever wondered if man could live on fast food alone. The film explores the horror of school lunch programs, declining health and physical education classes, food addictions and the extreme measures people take to lose weight and regain their health. SUPER SIZE ME is a satirical jab in the stomach, overstuffed with fat and facts about the billion-dollar industry besieged by doctors, lawyers and nutritionists alike. And like all great muck-raking journalism, SUPER SIZE ME has been a catalyst for change, even before its release to the public. Though McDonald's representatives declined Spurlock's repeated interview requests while he was making the movie, since the film blossomed at Sundance last February the fast food behemoth has reacted. It has begun a major effort to improve its image as the Philip Morris of the food industry by offering more healthy choices on their menus.
"Thanks to Spurlock's oversized and buoyant personality and some pretty nifty filmmaking, the results are as entertaining as they are sobering." (James Greenberg, the Hollywood Reporter)
"At once hugely entertaining -- and hugely scary." (Steven Rea, (the Philadelphia Inquirer)
