Me, Too!
“Fiction films with disability as a central theme (especially those that feature disabled actors) are not only tricky to assemble but also minefields to critique. Praise can sound patronizing and criticism cruel, the disability casting a bulletproof cloak of political correctness around the entire project. Consider me relieved, then, to report that “Me, Too” is neither overly ingratiating nor insistently message driven, the occasional sticky moment eased by an intelligent script”

Thirty-four-year-old Daniel is the first European with Downs syndrome to have graduated from university. He starts a social services job in Seville, where he meets free-spirited co-worker Laura. They become fast friends, drawing the attention of both their co-workers and families. Their unique relationship becomes problematic when Daniel falls in love with her. But these rebellious souls refuse to bend to the rules and they find friendship and love as they have never known.
“A 34-year-old virgin in Seville (Pablo Pineda, marvelous) refuses to let his Down syndrome crush his dreams in this bittersweet 2009 Spanish drama, which is gratifying for its lack of sentimentality. High-functioning and ironic, the hero lands a government office job and promptly tumbles for a frowsy coworker (Lola Duenas of Broken Embraces and Volver) whose low self-esteem leads her to drink too much and sleep around. A disarming frankness about the sexuality of the disabled and the fears and prejudices of others elevates the movie above such American fare as I Am Sam. Alvaro Pastor and Antonio Naharro direct with understatement and a cosmopolitan flair, best seen in a denouement that’s both tender and offbeat. – Chicago Reader
“Absorbing and moving… a sensitive crowdpleaser of impeccable intentions.” -- Variety
“An offbeat romance…touching, funny and sharp.” - Neil Young’s Film Lounge
