Love Object
Love Object
LOVE OBJECT is the twisted tale of Kenneth (Desmond Harrington), a socially insecure technical writer who forms an obsessive and impassioned relationship with "Nikki," an anatomically accurate silicone sex doll he orders from realdoll.com - in the image of Lisa, a real woman he is infatuated with. His experience with his new toy, gives Kenneth newfound romantic skills and he attracts the attention of Lisa (Melissa Sagemiller), an office co-worker. But when the doll's jealous personality invades his consciousness, Kenneth becomes trapped in a perverse and carnal triangle, torn between the dominating, silicone Nikki and the flesh-and-blood Lisa. Udo Kier plays Kenneth's nosey and perverted apartment manager and Rip Torn is his slave-driver boss.
In Film Comment, Amy Taubin wrote: "...PSYCHO gene-spliced with VERTIGO by way of De Palma... Robert Parigi's mordantly witty horror film, LOVE OBJECT depicts the seduction and perversity of living in a sim world where any possibility of progressivism is rendered moot and a disassociated patriarchy feeds on its own rage and insanity. In its sexual politics, LOVE OBJECT is a companion piece to Mary Harron's AMERICAN PSYCHO.
New York Times critic Elvis Mitchell commented that director Robert Parigi "shows a kicky sense of humor." He also notes influences of Hammer Films movies from the famous UK horror studio, as well as a sexually charged take on the ventriloquist sequence in the classic 1945 horror anthology film DEAD OF NIGHT.
Writing for Filmthreat.com, Eric Campos said, "This is a great little thriller with some genuinely creepy moments. I even found myself shocked at certain points because I couldn't believe how far things were getting out of control."
