Paper
Paper
Paper is a symbolic thing and has different meanings. First, paper is the documents, ID, green card or visa, social security, etc, which give a person a legal status and allows one to work. Jimmy, the photographer Mashka meets shoots his art on film and prints it on paper, as opposed to shooting digital for clients. There are photographs on paper everywhere, they are on the walls, on tables, hanging in the red developing room; they are something tangible, they have texture, something you can touch. Money is paper. Mashka needs security, financial stability and money, so she goes after it. The choices that she faces are not easy, but like so many immigrant women they must deal with the hand they are dealt.
