The First Hollywood Festival of the Best Ukrainian Films will take place in Laemmle Music Hall Theater from May 8 until May 14. This festival presents an exceptional opportunity to see unique works rarely seen outside of Europe by many distinguished, world-class Ukrainian filmmakers.
First and foremost is Yuri Illienko (1936-2010), cinematographer, director, painter, writer and actor, one of the most unique figures in the history of cinematography and the history of Soviet - Ukrainian Cinema.
On May 9, 8 PM, we will screen his best-known work as the cinematographer“Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” (1965), directed by another luminary of the Soviet-Ukranian-Armenian cinema of the 1960s-70s, Sergei Paradjanov (1924-1990). Another good sample of the specific style of Ukrainian cinematography of the ‘60s is the film “The Stone Cross” (director L. Osyka, DP V. Kvas). Other exceptional films include “Flights in Dreams and in Reality,” “White Bird Market with Black,” “ Fire Crosser,” “Swan Lake. The Zone” and several others.
