Racially Charged: America’s Misdemeanor Problem

Racially Charged: America’s Misdemeanor Problem

The enormous impact and underreporting of misdemeanors in our criminal justice system amounts to 13 million people a year being pulled into the criminal system.

Inspired by Alexandra Natapoff’s book, Punishment Without Crime, the film expands upon the narrative to shed light on a topic that has gone overlooked since Reconstruction and how racism disguised as public safety evolved into the carceral system we have today. Narrated by Oscar winning actor, Mahershala Ali, the film shows the parallels of the laws, money, and community impact via personal stories.
