GIULIO CESARE
GIULIO CESARE
Performed at the Glyndebourne Festival, England 2008
Conducted by William Christie
Directed by David McVicar
Cast: Danielle de Niese, Sarah Connolly, Christophe Dumaux, Christopher Maltman
In this opera production that is famous for its now-legendary performance by opera star Danielle de Niese, director David McVicar has blazed a new trail with his fabulous staging of this Baroque opera for the Glyndebourne Festival. His material is Handel's formidable, four-hour long 'Giulio Cesare in Egitto' (Julius Caesar in Egypt) with libretto by Nicola Francesco Haym. McVicar sets his production of Giulio Cesare in early 20th century, during a period of British colonialism in Egypt. Danielle de Niese makes her Glyndebourne debut as Cleopatra, a multifaceted character who uses her womanly wiles to seduce Cesare and gain the throne of Egypt, but falls hopelessly in love with him in the process. Considered by many to be Handel's finest Italian opera, Giulio Cesare is admired for its superb vocal writing, dramatic impact and deft orchestral arrangements.
"A remarkable crop of gifted and glamorous young sopranos has emerged in recent years. But the lyric soprano Danielle de Niese is probably the only one who can sing coloratura arias while dancing Bollywood-inspired choreography, as she does in this production of GIULIO CESARE. Her luscious singing, fluid coloratura technique and elegant ornamentation are stylishly accompanied by conductor William Christie and Les Arts Florissants." -- Vivien Schweitzer, New York Times
“Glyndebourne’s achievements are too various for one to speak of a company style, but there is certainly a Glyndebourne scent: of excellence and elegance, of singers and musicians enjoying at once the freedom gained by thorough rehearsal and the intimacy of a small, warm house. And its waft is strong, luxurious and exciting around the new production of Handel's "Giulio Cesare." (Paul Griffiths, New York Times)
