El Canto de las Manos

Directed by María Valverde, El Canto de las Manos (Song of Hands) explores deafness through music, following Jennifer, Gabriel, and José, three Deaf musicians from Venezuela, as they face the challenge of staging, for the first time in sign language, Beethoven’s Fidelio under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel.

The film reveals the isolation the protagonists experience within their own families and the social discrimination they endure because of their hearing condition, while showing how music becomes not only their refuge, but also their salvation and their hope.

This extraordinary journey follows the preparations for the auditions and the creative process of Fidelio, culminating in its premiere in Caracas. It is not only the first time Fidelio is performed in sign language, but also the moment when the protagonists debut as actors and soloists, offering them the opportunity to become role models within their community.
