JULIUS CAESAR HAS RETURNED TO ROME triumphant from the civil war against his former ally and triumvir, Pompey the Great. The Roman Republic prepares to heap him with new honours, and there are rumours that he might be crowned king. There hasn’t been a king in Rome for almost 500 years, when the last king – Tarquinius Superbus – was expelled by an ancestor of Marcus Brutus, after the rape of the chaste noblewoman Lucrece. Since then, the Republic and its ideals of shared power has prevailed. One man holding complete power over Rome is especially troubling to Caius Cassius. Cassius seeks to recruit fellow senators with similar concerns, including the noble and well-respected Marcus Brutus, an ally of Caesar, but also a dedicated believer in the Republic.
On the day of Caesar’s triumph – a military procession, which he decides to hold on the day of a
spiritual fertility festival, the Lupercal – he is warned by a soothsayer to beware a date in the
middle of March, known by the Romans as the ides…
