Whole New Thing
This comedic coming-of-age drama from Canada was an official selection of both the Toronto (2005) and Palm Springs (2006) International Film Festivals. WHOLE NEW THING follows precocious 13-year-old boy Emerson Thorsen, home-schooled by hippie parents Kaya and Rog in rural Nova Scotia. When enrolled in the local junior high, Emerson develops a crush on English teacher Don Grant, a gay man stuck in a kind of perpetual adolescence.
Produced by veteran film company executive Kelly Bray and award-winning producer Camelia Freiberg (The Five Senses, Exotica, The Sweet Hereafter), WHOLE NEW THING is the second feature film from director and co-writer Amnon Buchbinder. Buchbinder’s previous feature, Fishing Trip (1998) garnered a Genie Award (Canadian equivalent of the Oscars) as well as a Toronto International Film Festival berth.
Daniel MacIvor co-wrote, and also stars in WHOLE NEW THING as English teacher Don Grant. Previously McIvor wrote and directed several feature films including Wilby Wonderful (2004) and Past Perfect (2002). He also carries a long list of credits as a performer of both stage and screen, including a lead role in the short film Take-Out, part of Picture This’ Boys Briefs 2 compilation.
