water
This third film in Deepa Mehta's trilogy - the first were Fire (1996) and Earth (1998) -- is set in 1938 colonial India during Gandhi's rise to power. The story begins when eight-year-old Chuyia is widowed and sent to a home where Hindu widows must live in penitence. Chuyia's feisty presence affects the lives of the other residents, including a young widow who falls for a Gandhian idealist. "Profoundly moving." (Variety) "A triumph." (Time).
Mehta’s daughter Devyani Saltzman will attend the 7 p.m. screening on Saturday, April 29th at the Monicas and participate in a Q&A afterward. Saltzman is the author of Shooting Water: a Memoir, which chronicles the turbulent experience of filming WATER with her mother.
