Vietnam: Homecoming
"Pervis, doesn't everybody have their own Vietnam?"
For 35-plus years this question has haunted both veterans of the Vietnam War and their families. The domino effect has fallen many ways for those that participated. The years since have allowed the time to see the ripple through multiple generations. As if a light switch had been turned on 25 to 30 years later, Vietnam veterans around the country come to an age where their deeply hidden past is dragged out into the open. Now older, as if awakening from a very long dream, Vietnam becomes the focus of their lives once again. Some would get there by way of mental breakdowns, others through emotional exhaustion, while others through a sense that the time was finally right. Their search to put the "pieces of the puzzle" back together again is concomitant with all their hidden demons: anger, bitterness and regret, all of which had already taken their victims. Their search will uncover the scars and wounds of those who stood closest to the fire: wives, sons and daughters
.
In June of 2005, Branson, Missouri held Operation Homecoming, a week long event planned to provide Vietnam veterans with the welcome home they never received. Over 40,000 veterans would attend.
VIETNAM: HOMECOMING follows the journey of three of these families in search of answers. It is a journey that brings them face to face with each other, the past that has been lost and a future that is unknown. It is a journey that uncovers the strengths and weaknesses that lie within each of us, veteran or not.
VIETNAM: HOMECOMING combines original footage photographed on location by producer, director, Sammy Jackson and rare archival footage.
