Vicious Circle
“Bold visual motifs dominate "Vicious Circle," tyro helmer Paul Boyd's "Romeo and Juliet"-ish tale of star-crossed teens in Venice, Calif. Fantastic floating images of white horses, red roses and black chess pieces surround the young lovers while events rush past, fueled by tragic misunderstandings. Striking, occasionally overextended conceits, such as superimposing characters into flat, artificial, hand-drawn settings, sometimes threaten to overwhelm pic, but intense thesping by its leads brings foreground and background back into focus. Top award-winner at New York Latino Film Fest generates energy and conviction that could spark theatrical interest.”
Vicious Circle
Two unusual teenagers find true love in the face of adversity, disapproval and murder in this independent drama that won the Best Film Award at the 2008 New York Latino International Film Festival. RJ (Paul Rodriguez, Jr. aka P-Rod) is a young skater living in Venice, California who aspires to become a comic book artist. His other passion, the game of chess, permeates his art and life: RJ lives by the rules of the game and understands the repercussions of one bad move. When he meets Angel (Emily Rios), a free-spirited Latina who sings in a punk band and lives a reckless lifestyle in defiance of her own epilepsy, it’s love at first sight. But not everyone is happy with the match. Yet this is the least of their problems when RJ reveals a secret that could cost Angel her life!
