Trouble in Paradise
TROUBLE IN PARADISE: April 21 & 22 - 2004
The chilling and inspiring Trouble in Paradise details the real-life drama that has unfolded in the chaotic landscape of Florida politics since Election 2000. The story follows five ordinary Floridians in the thick of it; motivated by a sense of civic responsibility, they volunteer on campaigns, run for office, sue the state, and revisit the disturbing facts and unanswered questions of the historic election that changed their lives. The film brings to light little-known facts about voters' disenfranchisement in 2000, disenfranchisement that continued during the gubernatorial election of 2002.

Today I Vote For My Joey
"Today I Vote for My Joey" is a tragic comedy about the 2000 Presidential elections in Palm Beach County. The short depicts a group of older, feisty Jews and a Haitian nurse going to vote proudly for the first Jewish Vice-Presidential candidate (the "Joey" Lieberman of the title). Their day is ruined when they find they mistakenly voted for their nemesis, Pat Buchanan. Also addressed are the issues of voting rights in our democracy, especially for those denied them in "the old country" and Haiti. Kempner also made "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg" (1998) JOey was made in the AFI's Directing Workshop for Women. www.votejoeyfilm.org 20 mins / The Ciesla Foundation / dir. Aviva Kempner
