THE SEVEN-PER-CENT SOLUTION (1976)
Tuesday, May 17, at 7:00 PM at the Royal Theatre, followed by a Q&A with novelist and screenwriter Nicholas Meyer.
Two of the greatest detectives in history—Sherlock Holmes and Sigmund Freud—team up to solve a mystery in Vienna at the turn of the 20th century. This tantalizing concept was at the heart of Nicholas Meyer’s best-selling 1974 novel, and the 1976 film directed by Herbert Ross brought the story to vivid cinematic life. Meyer adapted his own novel for the screen and earned an Oscar nomination for the effort. The stellar cast includes Nicol Williamson as Holmes, Alan Arkin as Freud, Robert Duvall as Dr. Watson, along with Laurence Olivier, Vanessa Redgrave, Joel Grey, and Jeremy Kemp. Pauline Kael called the elegant, witty film “a highly civilized light entertainment.”
Nicholas Meyer has achieved success as a novelist, screenwriter, and director. His many other films as either writer or director include Time After Time, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Sommersby, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, The Deceivers, Company Business, and The Human Stain.
