The Seagull's Laughter
THE SEAGULL'S LAUGHTER takes place in a village outside Reykjavik in 1953. Freya, who had gone to America as a U.S. officer’s bride, has returned home to begin a new life. But unlike the drab, plump girl who went abroad, Freya, now in her twenties, is a stunningly beautiful and overtly sexual woman. With her long chestnut brown hair, slender figure (which even she can’t help admiring at every available mirror), and chic American fashions, she is somewhat of a mystery to the local women, especially to the inquisitive eleven-year-old Agga, and of course to the men of the community. Freya enchants most of the town’s eligible bachelors but has her sights set on a bigger prize: Bjorn Theodor, a debonair and wealthy businessman who happens to be engaged to the daughter of the local magistrate. But since Freya’s arrival, strange things have been happening in this sleepy little town: women appear to be asserting their independence, and men are mysteriously keeling over. Who exactly is Freya? A Viking heroine? A fairy queen? A murderess? A goddess of love? These are questions little Agga, our young spy, would very much like to have answered.
