Past Run
A scanner darkly
Richard Linklater's long-awaited follow-up to his brilliant 2001 experiment in philosophical rumination coupled with otoscoping and computer animation, Waking Life. This one, using the same technique that augments live actors with animation, draws its plot from a Phillip K. Dick novel about a future society rife with secret government spies. Keanu Reeves is one such functionary, hired to spy on his loquacious, drug-addled friends in Southern California. The results are both disquieting and hilarious. With Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson and Winona Ryder.
