Rosenstrasse
Also watch for the new German drama ROSENSTRASSE, a stunning tribute to the German women of World War II who courageously fought to save the lives of their Jewish husbands. The renowned director is Margarethe von Trotta (The Lost Honor Of Katharina Blum, Marianne And Julianne, Rosa Luxemburg). The movie features a talented cast including Venice International Film Festival Best Actress Award Winner and European Film Award Nominee Katja Riemann (BANDITS, COMEDIAN HARMONISTS) and Maria Schrader (AIMÉE AND JAGUAR), ROSENSTRASSE was shown to great acclaim at last year’s Venice, Toronto and AFI festivals, and also won the David di Donatello Award for Best European Film. In Berlin in 1943 on a street called Rosenstrasse, Jewish men were rounded up for deportation to concentration camps and certain death. Based on a true story, the film shows the valiant effort by the men’s Aryan wives, who fought to secure their release and save their lives. The women’s powerful, little-known struggle is recounted in the film and their ultimate success is both a moving and inspirational testament to the power of love. Handsomely crafted by von Trotta, ROSENSTRASSE is a unique look at this subject presented from a truly German point of view. It's also quite timely as an extraordinary example of the power of public dissent.
"Pic is always watchable thanks to the fine perfs, with Riemann and Schade, who convincingly portray young and old Lena, respectively, rating high in the acting stakes."
-- David Stratton, VARIETY
"All of the actors acquit themselves well, with a special nod to the warm and vital Schade, the loyal and radiant Riemann and Schrader." -- Jean Oppenheimer, HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
