Le Rayon Vert

Declared the best movie of 1986 by Andrew Sarris -- a year that also included Hannah and Her Sisters, The Sacrifice and Vagabond -- LE RAYON VERT is frequently cited as a career triumph in a filmography that includes numerous great films. Rohmer's story, the fifth in his "Comedies & Proverbs" cycle, follows the independent but insecure Delphine (Marie Rivière), a newly single young Parisian who cannot find a holiday companion for the month of August, and meets and rejects, glides and tumbles in her longing for connection. Overhearing a discussion of Jules Verne, Delphine becomes fascinated with seeing an elusive meteorological event -- the Green Ray -- and the promise that comes with it. Rohmer regular Rivière (An Autumn Tale, The Aviator's Wife), who also co-wrote her largely self-created role, delivers one of the most captivating performances in any of the director's works.

“Now here's a summer movie to get excited about. A masterful pastoral comedy. A sublime work of cinema." [5 stars -- highest rating] (Keith Uhlich, Time Out New York)

"May be the finest example of [Rohmer's] supple and prickly artistry. He blends fiction and documentary with a graceful splendor of impressionist inspiration, and the actress Marie Rivière brings energy, spontaneity, and involuted passion to the role of Delphine, a Paris secretary whose profound and instinctive gift for negation is put to the test when her vacation plans are spoiled two weeks before her planned departure… an ethnographic case study of French leisure habits -- as well as a pictorial celebration of the voluptuous natural habitats and architectural glories around which they're organized." (Richard Brody, The New Yorker)
