Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire
A luckless, pregnant 16-year-old (Gabourey Sidibe), living in Harlem with her abusive mother (Mo’Nique), finds a chance to escape her miserable circumstances through a literacy workshop led by a sympathetic teacher (Paula Patton). Lee Daniels’s film was the audience award winner at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. With Mariah Carey.
“Risky, remarkable...Ms. Sidibe, perhaps the least-known member of this movie’s unusual cast, is also the glue that holds it together. Nimble and self-assured as Mr. Daniels’s direction may be, he could not make you believe in Precious unless you were able to believe in Precious herself. You will.” (A.O. Scott, New York Times)
An Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actress (Mo’Nique) and Adapted Screenplay and a nominee for Best Actress, Picture, Directing (the first by an African-American) and Editing.
A Golden Globe nominee for Best Motion Picture - Drama, Best Actress - Drama and winner for Best Supporting Actress (Mo’Nique).
A Spirit Awards winner for Best Feature, Director, First Screenplay, Female Lead and Supporting Female (Mo’Nique).
A DGA nominee for Best Director.
