Pan’s Labyrinth
At the end of the Spanish Civil War, a little girl (Ivana Baquero) is taken to the countryside by her new stepfather, a brutal officer of the Franco regime (Sergi Lopez) charged with cleaning up the remaining resistance. Her only refuge from the violence around her is a fantasy world she constructs, dominated by mythical creatures who are not as benign as they first appear. A genuinely poetic horror film from the Mexican filmmaker Guillermo de Toro (Cronos, The Devil’s Backbone). An Oscar winner for Best Achievement in Art Direction, Makeup and Cinematography.
“It's not only one of the great fantasy pictures but one of the great end-of-childhood elegies.” (salon.com)
