The Lightkeepers

Seth Atkins (Academy Award winner RICHARD DREYFUSS) is the lightkeeper for Eastham Light, located on the deserted outer beach of Cape Cod in the year 1912. It’s a lonely job, but that’s the way he likes it. When his assistant lightkeeper suddenly quits, no longer able to tolerate Seth’s bad attitude and hate for women, Seth is left to manage the lighthouse on his own. That soon changes when a mysterious, strapping young man, John Brown (TOM WISDOM), washes up on shore, and wants to take the position of assistant lightkeeper.

The two men eventually swap tales of their past, which explains why each of them are women-haters: John ran away from civilization to avoid a “nasty predicament”: avoiding a woman and Seth ran away when his wife, as a promise to her first husband, took in her selfish brother-in-law, Bennie (Academy Award nominee BRUCE DERN). When they spot a buggy carrying two women heading toward the lighthouse, they hide, a swear a solemn oath to never get involved with any woman – ever. But soon the two men have to contend with the lovely Ruth Graham (MAMIE GUMMER) and her housekeeper, Mrs. Bascom (Golden Globe nominee BLYTHE DANNER), who have come to stay in the only other house on that stretch of beach, a nearby bungalow, for the summer.

Over the next several weeks, John falls head over heels for Ruth, but tries to keep his new passion a secret from Seth, who does his best to spy on them. When Seth meets Mrs. Bascom, he is shocked to find that it is his wife, Emeline. Because Seth is living under an assumed name, they are able to protect their secret. Eventually Seth and Emeline are able to resolve their differences and agree to give their relationship a second chance.
