The Letter

In the midst of a brutal civil war, raised out of the tensions between minority Tamils and majority Sinhalese in Sri Lanka, an unexplainable connection between a soldier and a village girl break the barriers of language and ethnic differences. After getting injured in combat, Dhanuka, a Sinhalese soldier ends up in the care of a free spirited village girl, Uma. Despite being on opposing sides of a bloody conflict and being unable to understand one another, Uma risks her life to care for Dhanuka. Amidst the destruction around them, a special kind of romance develops between the two. Dhanuka entrusts Uma to mail letters back home illegally, and she does so, under the condition that one day he write her a letter as well. One day, the pair is thrown into chaotic encounter with guerrilla forces and Dhanuka hands Uma a final letter to mail back home, which she mistakenly believes is for her. Dhanuka meets with the inevitable fate that Uma tries so hard to protect him from. The only memento of Dhanuka Uma has left is the fateful letter he handed her. She continues to live in their memories, even after the war ends… until Dhanuka’s girlfriend from home, Dinithi, who had been receiving his letters, comes up north to find out the real reason why they stopped arriving. During Dinithi’s investigation, the truth about Dhanuka emerges, and so does the complexity of what we call love.
