THE INTENDED is a period drama/thriller about a surveyor and his fiancée (Janet McTeer, who also co-wrote the script) who arrive in a remote Malaysian trading post and encounter a closed-fisted ivory trader and her ill-meaning family. Former Dogme director Kristian Levring spent months in the jungle of Malaysia with a powerhouse cast, a stunning script and a digital camera. The result is a gripping look at the last days of the British Empire. The movie's set in 1924; Sarah and Hamish travel from England deep in to the jungle to earn their fortune surveying an ivory trading post. Instead of an exotic retreat, the couple encounters an oppressively small community. Despite their best intentions, their presence in the jungle unleashes a downward spiral that ends in greed, murder and madness. Levring uses digital video to achieve startling intimacy with his actors. The result is a rich, atmospheric portrayal of well-meaning people who get hopelessly, dreadfully lost in their pursuit of happiness. Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker are McTeer's co-stars.
