herbie hancock: possibilities
Personal appearance by Herbie Hancock for the 7:30 p.m. at Regent Showcase on 4/14
HERBIE HANCOCK: POSSIBILITIES is an intimate documentary about Hancock and his recent in-studio collaborations with a dozen formidable pop recording artists that produced one of the most eclectic records of his career.
The film follows Hancock over a year and a half of collaborating with such acclaimed musicians as Carlos Santana, Sting, Angelique Kidjo, Annie Lennox, Paul Simon, Christina Aguilera, John Mayer, Trey Anastasio, Jonny Lang, Joss Stone, Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan and features portions from an unforgettable rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “I Just Called To Say I Love You” with Raul Midon.
POSSIBILITIES is also about how Hancock’s unique worldview shapes a creative environment that encourages artists to step outside the velvet prison of easy expectations. Hancock tells Trey Anastasio in a scene from the film: “The hip stuff is outside the comfort zone.”
The film also puts Hancock’s latest work in the context of his extraordinary musical career, and includes rarely seen archival footage of him with the Miles Davis Quintet from 1962; Hancock leading his Headhunters with their hit tune,“Chameleon;” the classic video for “Rockit” and never-before-seen duets of Hancock and Wayne Shorter playing for peace in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 2005 on the 60th anniversary of the atomic explosions.
