Happy-Go-Lucky

Mike Leigh follows 2004’s melancholic Vera Drake with a whimsical comedy that chronicles a few weeks in the life of Poppy (Sally Hawkins, who won an award for her performance at the ‘08 Berlin Film Fest), an English schoolteacher who confronts every obstacle in her life (a stolen bike, a scornful driving instructor) with eternal optimism. Leigh’s sunniest film since Topsy-Turvy and Life is Sweet.

“A delightful comedy that sinks its teeth into your heart with unexpected power.” (Times [London]

“In the factory-farmed blandness of the movies, Happy-Go-Lucky has a strong, real taste.” (Guardian)
