John Waters’s 1988 camp comedy, about a Baltimore teenager who strikes a blow for civil rights, comes full circle -- it’s a movie again, this time with a Broadway score. John Travolta, in Divine drag, stars as the teenager’s concerned mom; with Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah, Christopher Walken and a spirited newcomer, Nikki Blonsky, as heroine Tracy Turnblad. Directed by choreographer Adam Shankman.
"It's one of the best Broadway-tuner adaptations in recent years -- yes, arguably even better than those Oscar-winning ones. Unpretentious, feel-good pic is low on histrionic diva wailing and MTV-style editing, high on retro movie-musical craftsmanship." (David Harvey, Variety)
