Goodbye Solo
The latest film from emerging American auteur Ramin Bahrani (Man Push Cart, Chop Shop) tells the moving story of the unlikely friendship that develops between Solo (newcomer Souléymane Sy Savané), a kindhearted Senegalese taxi driver, and his passenger, a tough old southerner (Red West, of Elvis’s Memphis Mafia fame) whose destination request is difficult to honor yet impossible to ignore. Beautifully shot and set in Bahrani’s home town of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Goodbye Solo is a geographical departure from his recent New York dramas but continues his exploration of immigrant lives and outsiders too rarely explored on film.
“Bahrani has made a true drama, a tug-of-war between hope and resignation in which neither player openly speaks to what’s coming.” (David Edelstein, New York Magazine)
