Empty Nest

“Dark and light invariably go hand in hand in Burman's work, but this tender, goofily circular portrait of how we fill up the cavernous space once occupied by children begins and ends, beautifully, with an image of a man and a woman floating head to head on water—hapless, helpless, happy.”

Empty Nest

(El Nido Vacio)
In which Argentine writer/director Daniel Burman (Lost Embrace, Double Silver Bear Winner in Berlin) and one of Latin America's most widely known filmmakers, takes a humorous and loving look at a fussy, self-absorbed, but lovable artist and his enterprising, down-to-earth wife, both coping with the titular syndrome.

When their last child leaves home, an Argentine couple suddenly finds itself alone for the first time in years. While Martha (Cecilia Roth, All About My Mother) goes back to school to cope, her husband, Leonardo (Oscar Martinez), disappears into an all-consuming fantasy life. Daniel Burman (Lost Embrace) directs this comedic drama set in Buenos Aires.

EMPTY NEST was released to great acclaim in Argentina and had a very successful theatrical release. Diego Lerer, the critic from the major newspaper Clarin wrote, “Films like EMPTY NEST are excellent because the filmmakers that make them are filmmakers for whom nothing human, nor cinematographic, is strange. Burman to perfection.”

The picture subsequently received its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2008, and then screened at the prestigious San Sebastian International Film Festival, where it won two awards, Best Actress for Cecilia Roth, and Best Cinematography. Directed by Daniel Burman, whose Lost Embrace won two Silver Bears at the 2004 Berlin Film Festival.
