Dogville

Nicole Kidman stars as Grace, a beautiful, innocent stranger on the run from gangsters who arrives in Dogville, a small town in the Rocky Mountains in the 1930s, and overturns the towns-folks' preconceptions about human nature. The little community agrees to hide her and in return Grace agrees to work for them. When the gangsters' search sets in, however, the people of Dogville demand a better deal in exchange for the risk of harboring the fugitive and she learns the hard way that in this town, goodness is relative. Still, Grace has a dangerous secret. Dogville may regret it ever began to bare its teeth. Lars von Trier's multi-award-winning film features a stellar ensemble cast that includes Stellan Skarsgaard, Lauren Bacall, James Caan, Chloe Sevigny, Philip Baker Hall, John Hurt, Ben Gazzara, Patricia Clarkson, Jeremy Davies and Paul Bettany. "For passion, originality, and sustained chutzpah, this austere allegory of failed Christian charity and Old Testament payback is von Trier's strongest movie -- a masterpiece, in fact." ~ J. Hoberman, The Village Voice.
