SAMANTHA and DAVID McCARTHY (37, and 39) have hit a rough patch in their 18-year marriage. David has admitted a one-time-inappropriate moment with one of Samantha’s co-workers at her high-end restaurant.
Their split complicates senior year for their daughter ELLIE (17). For one last spring break before college, the mother and daughter jet to Florida's Gulf Coast. Once the ladies land in St. Pete, their girl time starts out blissfully, although David continues to interrupt. Ellie befriends the cute cashier at the hotel gift shop IAN (21), while Samantha meets the handsome JAVIER (38), who, to the chagrin of Ian, invites her and Ellie the next day on a picnic day-sail on his yacht.
Initially, the three of them enjoy sailing, and warm water snorkeling among schools of colorful fishes. After lunch, their cruise takes an unpleasant tact, when Javier tries to kill Ellie and kidnap Samantha in a bride-for-cash scheme. Defending her
mom, Ellie cracks a wine bottle on Javier’s head. Dazed, the disreputable captain tumbles overboard, and fails to resurface. The ship surges out to sea, and out of control before running out of fuel. Unable to sail, the women are stuck adrift with no land in
sight for miles.
Later that night they pass by an island and swim for shore. When David finally gets through to Ellie’s cell phone, the conversation is spotty. He can hear her, but she cannot hear him. Taking in enough to know the girls are in serious trouble, David books a flight for St. Pete, and alerts the FBI.
After a fretful night on the beach, Samantha discovers an abandoned fishing shack. Somebody had just used the shack to dry their clothes and cook fish and now is out on the island. Are they a friend or foe? They search deeper into the shack and soon
uncover Samantha's face on one of several forged passports. They fear Javier must still be alive, and David could only arrive too late.
Samantha and Ellie must manage this crisis together and overcome the threats which menace them on a difficult to reach island, familiar only to their adductor.
