Coffee and Cigarettes
The true indie spirit still lives as Jim Jarmusch returns with COFFEE & CIGARETTES. Jarmusch hasn't treated us to a movie since 1999's incomparable GHOST DOG. In COFFEE he achieves something much lighter, bringing together several comic vignettes all devoted to conversation, coffee, cigarettes, related topics, and well, unrelated topics. The shorts build on one another with a very funny cumulative effect as the characters discuss things as diverse as caffeine Popsicles, Paris in the twenties, and the use of nicotine as an insecticide, all the while sitting around indulging in the titular substances. Jarmusch shows just how absorbing the obsessions, joys and addictions of life can be. His typically eclectic cast includes Bill Murray, Steve Buscemi, Steven Wright, Cate Blanchett, Roberto Benigni, Iggy Pop and Tom Waits. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone: "Sure, it's just two or three people bonding over the twin addictions of the title. But Jarmusch makes it a feast that plays like a haunting concept album."
