Carlos
CARLOS is the highly anticipated epic by acclaimed filmmaker Olivier Assayas (SUMMER HOURS), which played at the Cannes and Telluride film festivals to critical acclaim and will soon be seen at the New York Film Festival. This daring and propulsive five-and-a-half-hour film is the definitive portrait of the renowned international terrorist known as Carlos the Jackal, who masterminded a wave of terror attacks in Europe and the Middle East in the ’70s and ’80s. Venezuelan actor Édgar Ramírez (CHE, THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM) stars in the title role.
"(An) epic achievement...Nothing I've encountered on any size screen matches the lucidity of this fact-based fiction—it amounts to a textbook on state-sponsored terrorism—and nothing I've seen in recent years has held my attention so relentlessly. 'Carlos' also stands as a textbook case of the total immersion that one can enjoy only in a theatrical setting." - Joe Morgenstern, The Wall Street Journal
"An astonishing film. Olivier Assayas adopts a fleet, ever-propulsive style that creates an extraordinary you-are-there sense of verisimilitude, while Edgar Ramirez inhabits the title role with the arrogant charisma of Brando in his prime." - Todd McCarthy, indieWIRE
Co-written by Assayas and Dan Franck, CARLOS illustrates the evolution of contemporary terrorism as it examines the life of its title character, a Venezuelan whose real name is Ilich Ramírez Sánchez. Tracing the arc of Carlos’ criminal activities across two decades and several nations, the film features a dynamic cast of international talent and was shot in numerous countries, including Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Lebanon, and Morocco.
Olivier Assayas’ 2009 box office success SUMMER HOURS won the award for Best Foreign Film from the National Society of Film Critics, the New York Film Critics Circle, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the Boston Society of Film Critics. His other films include COLD WATER (1994), IRMA VEP (1996), LATE AUGUST, EARLY SEPTEMBER (1998), LES DESTINEES (2000), DEMONLOVER (2002), CLEAN (2004), and BOARDING GATE (2007).
