Bukowski: Born Into This
Known for "Love is a Dog from Hell," "Notes of a Dirty Old Man," and the autobiographical novels "Women," "Hollywood" and "Post Office" (as well as the screenplay for BARFLY), Charles Bukowski's simple, powerful and often graphic prose succeeded in creating a mythos of epic proportions around its creator. First time director John Dullaghan's documentary manages to reveal the man behind the myth, utilizing interviews of Bukowski and the people who knew him best, peeling off the hardened mask of the beast to uncover the insecure, loving and extremely human man underneath. Includes readings by Sean Penn, Bono and Harry Dean Stanton.
"An unforgettable portrait. This is that rare document which manages to be entirely truthful." - F.X. Feeney, KPCC
"'Poet laureate of the gutter,' ranter, sexual boaster, bane of the middle class and lifelong outcast, the writer cultivated a persona that begs for documentary treatment, and he gets a good one in BUKOWSKI: BORN INTO THIS." -- Walter V. Addiego, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
"You come out of the theater wanting to beeline to a bookstore, grab a copy of "Post Office" or "Love Is a Dog from Hell," and adjust your opinion as necessary." -- Ty Burr, BOSTON GLOBE
"Charles Bukowski, the bard of post-war L.A.'s working-class underbelly, was no ordinary cult writer, and John Dullaghan's thorough, compelling doc BUKOWSKI: BORN INTO THIS does a credible job of showing why." -- Mark Holcomb, VILLAGE VOICE
"Accomplishes beautifully what it sets out to do, which is to reveal the man behind the crusty, hard-drinking, tough-talking persona Charles Bukowski so artfully crafted."
