Biutiful
From director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (AMORES PERROS, BABEL) comes this stylized, surreal portrait of single father Uxbal (Javier Bardem), scraping by in the present-day Barcelona slums working as a liaison between illegal immigrants from Senegal and China and those who exploit them for work. A psychic ability allows Uxbal to relay messages between the recently deceased and their relatives, but when death appears imminent in his own path, he must settle the life he will leave behind. Inarritu's intense, harshly-lit imagery, a piercing soundtrack by Gustavo Santaolalla, and a masterfully emotional performance from Bardem provide a lens into the world of a man forced to confront the corruption of his livelihood and find redemption for himself. "A sublime epic, and possibly the best film of the year by a long way." -Anthony Kaufman, IFC.com
An Oscar nominee for Best Actor and Best Foreign Language Film.
A Golden Globe nominee for Best Foreign Language Film.
Winner of the Best Actor prize at Cannes 2010.
“From one scene to the next, as is his custom, Mr. Gonzalez Inarritu creates a feeling of raw, sprawling intimacy.” (A.O. Scott, New York Times)
“[It] ultimately gives us a story of hope, and from Bardem, a performance of staggering depth, unquestionably one of the year's best.” (Betsy Sharkey, L.A. Times)
