After the Wedding
With AFTER THE WEDDING, Denmark's Susanne Bier confirms her stature as a leading international director. The film had its World Premiere at the Toronto Film Festival as a Gala screening and has made the festival rounds to critical acclaim.
Jacob Peterson (Mads Mikkelsen) has run an orphanage in India for the last 20 years. He is reluctantly lured back to Denmark to meet with a potential donor, the wealthy industrialist Jørgen (Rolf Lassgård), who is only willing to come to the organization's rescue if Jacob personally makes a presentation. Once there, the affable Jørgen insists Jacob attend Jørgen's beloved daughter's wedding, where Jacob unwittingly walks into his past.
A film of enormous emotional sweep driven by extraordinary performances from Mikkelsen, Lassgård and Sidse Babett Knudson, Bier explores what it means to be part of a family in a modern context and the muddy moral ground resulting from good intentions and human failings: terrain she so adroitly covered in her earlier award-winning films, OPEN HEARTS and BROTHERS. Currently, Bier is in post-production on Dreamwork's THINGS WE LOST IN THE FIRE, which stars Halle Berry, Benicio del Toro and David Duchovny. Her first English language movie, the film is produced by Sam Mendes and Sam Mercer.
AFTER THE WEDDING was directed by Susanne Bier who also developed the story with Anders Thomas Jensen (BROTHERS, ADAM'S APPLES). Mads Mikkelsen (CASINO ROYALE, OPEN HEARTS, The PUSHER Trilogy), Rolf Lassgård (UNDER THE SUN) and Sidse Babett Knudson star. The film was produced by Sisse Graum Jorgensen (RED ROAD, BROTHERS) and executive produced by Peter Aalback Jensen and Peter Garde (who both produced BROTHERS, DOGVILLE).
“A filmmaker who excels in peeling back those delicate layers of human frailty, Denmark's Susanne Bier returns to Toronto, which premiered her previous two films, with another powerful family portrait.” (Hollywood Reporter)
“The spiky, screen-filling performance of [the] two male leads . . . are really something to see.” (Manohla Dargis, New York Times)
