Past Run
2001: A Space Odyssey
With the latest iteration of the Terminator series about to arrive, Laemmle Theatres and EAT/SEE/HEAR’s Throwback Thursday is proud to offer one of the greatest science fiction films ever: 2001: A Space Odyssey. Humanity finds a mysterious artificial object buried beneath the lunar surface and, with the computer H.A.L. 9000, sets off on a quest. With the assistance of special-effects expert Douglas Trumbull, Stanley Kubrick spent over two years meticulously creating the most realistic depiction of outer space ever seen, greatly advancing cinematic technology for a story expressing grave doubts about technology itself.
“Some sort of great film, and an unforgettable endeavor. Technically and imaginatively, what [Kubrick] put into it is staggering.”
— Penelope Gilliatt, New Yorker
