JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG was the first major American movie to focus on war crimes trials in Germany after World War II. The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards in 1961 and won two top Oscars: Best Actor Maximilian Schell and Best Adapted Screenplay by Abby Mann. Producer-director Stanley Kramer also won the Academy’s prestigious Irving Thalberg Award at the Oscars that year.
The all-star cast includes Spencer Tracy, Burt Lancaster, Richard Widmark, Marlene Dietrich, Montgomery Clift, Judy Garland, and William Shatner. Kramer, known for his commitment to making hard-hitting films of social commentary, was the producer or director of such films as High Noon, The Caine Mutiny, The Defiant Ones, On the Beach, Inherit the Wind, Ship of Fools, and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.
Joining us for a discussion before the screening will be Kramer’s widow, Karen Sharpe Kramer, a former actress in both film and television, who oversees the Stanley Kramer Library and the Stanley Kramer Award given by the Producers Guild of America for films of social consciousness.
