Weapons of the Spirit

Weapons of the Spirit

Weapons of the Spirit, the pioneering, highly acclaimed feature documentary about rescue during the Holocaust, will soon to be released in a new, re-mastered 25th-anniversary edition.

The film tells the story of a mountain plateau in France that turned itself into a unique haven of refuge during the Holocaust. In and around the village of Le Chambon, some 5,000 Jews were sheltered—the most dense and persistent rescue effort to occur anywhere in Nazi-occupied Europe. There, the peasants and villagers turned no one away, betrayed no one, attempted to convert no one. There was something to be done and they just did it—no big deal.

Among the rescued were filmmaker Pierre Sauvage's parents, and he himself had the good fortune to be born there at that time. He returned in time to capture the testimony of the rescuers and the rescued. The screening is made possible by the Chambon Foundation (www.chambon.org).
