Alceste loves Celimene, a worldly woman in love with freedom, but rejects the society of propriety to which they belong. Haunted by a lawsuit whose outcome he fears, Alceste goes to her home to seek her help...

The Misanthrope offers a view of a society released from the parental and religious influence, whose social varnish disappears when the desire arises. Driven to extremism by Alceste's radicalism, ready to give up any form of worldliness, the characters unveil, for a day, the contradictions of the human race subject to a heart that reason does not know.
