My Art

The directorial debut of art star Laurie Simmons is a hilariously frank look at life, love and creativity in middle-age.

Ellie Shine (Laurie Simmons) is a single artist living in New York City with a stable teaching job, successful friends, and a loyal, aging dog named Bing. But her lifelong dream of a respectable place in the art world continues to elude her. When a friend offers Ellie her summer home and studio in gorgeous Upstate New York, she seizes the opportunity to hit the reset button on her life and work. Ellie unwittingly finds inspiration in two out-of-work actors who maintain the gardens at her summer retreat: Frank, a recent widower trying to reassemble his life by turning his back on a mediocre career, and Tom, an aspiring young actor whose wife (Parker Posey) has a less ambitious vision for their idyllic country existence. These unlikely collaborators -- and would-be suitors -- help Ellie reinvent her artistic identity by participating in DIY videos—improbable recreations of old Hollywood films. They accompany Ellie on an unexpected journey toward finding her late-blooming artistic momentum. Featuring Lena Dunham (GIRLS), Blair Brown (ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK), and Barbara Sukowa (HANNAH ARENDT), MY ART showcases celebrated photographer Laurie Simmons' formidable filmmaking talents.
