Rouben Mamoulian directed his final film with this stylish musical remake of Ninotchka, with Cyd Charisse in the Garbo role of a repressed Soviet diplomat on a mission in Paris. When three Commissars, on a mission from moscow to Paris, fial in their efforts to persuade the famed Russian composer, Peter Boroff, to return to the Soviet Union, Ninotchka is assigned to bring the issue to a successful conclusion. The Russians don't want to see Boroff writing a score for the American producer, Steve Canfield. Arriving from Moscow, Ninotchka expresses her disdain for capitalism. at the same time, she discovers that she cannot force the composer to return to Russia that she cannot force the composer to return to Russia as he has an affidavit proving his father was French. Ninotchka considers taking legal action but finds herself being seduced instead by the beauty of Paris and the charms of Steve. Ninotchka is dispatched to bring them back. But this time she decides to remain with Steve. |
