Judit (Memoirs of a River) Elek directs this coming of age story told in a magic realism style, Awakening is about a young girl living in
communist Budapest during the 1950s. Thirteen year old Kati lives by herself in a communal apartment after her mother’s untimely death and her father’s exile to a labor camp. She befriends an old scholar, meets boys, hosts a wild party and shares her daily life with her mother’s ghost. Ultimately through an understanding relationship and a sexual awakening, Kati finally comes to terms with her loss.
