A near-flawless portrait of how girls cope with, act out against, and escape from repressive circumstances.

Mustang

Early summer in a village in Northern Turkey. Five free-spirited teenaged sisters splash about on the beach with their male classmates. Though their games are merely innocent fun, a neighbor passes by and reports to the girls’ family what she considers to be illicit behavior. The family overreacts, removing all “instruments of corruption,” like cell phones and computers, and essentially imprisoning the girls, subjecting them to endless lessons in housework in preparation for them to become brides. As the eldest sisters are married off, the younger ones bond together to avoid the same fate. Their fierce love for each other emboldens them to rebel and chase a future where they can determine their own lives in Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s debut, a powerful portrait of female empowerment.

“What makes the transfixing film so effective is that the director refuses to portray them simplistically, as misunderstood angels, and she has enough trust in her audience to leave the drama's implicit feminism unstated.” (David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter)

“[Erguven] proves especially skilled with her cast of newcomers, whose powerful individualism as well as their vibrant bond together are perfect vessels for the script's message.” (Jay Weissberg, Variety)

David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter

The word Mustang, which is also the evocative title of Turkish-French filmmaker Deniz Gamze Erguven's stirring first feature, conjures vivid images of bands of wild horses roaming the untamed American West, their manes flying and their defiant spirits resistant to being broken. Those qualities also ...
